Why “How much lift do I need for 35s?” has no universal answer
The same nominal tire size can behave differently from one vehicle and wheel setup to another. Clearance changes with suspension geometry, factory ride height, wheel diameter, wheel width, offset or backspacing, actual tire dimensions, alignment and the shape of the inner fender and crash-bar area. A manufacturer may publish a combination with no trimming, minor trimming, required trimming or a test-fit warning.
That is why Lift Kit Match keeps vehicle fit and wheel/tire fit as separate decisions. A suspension kit can fit the truck correctly while a particular wheel-and-tire combination still rubs or requires modification.
33-inch tires: often possible with milder systems, but still configuration-specific
Thirty-three-inch-class tires appear across mild and moderate systems in the current manufacturer data. BDS publishes up-to-33-inch guidance on some Tacoma systems. Rough Country’s 3-inch 4Runner system documents 33x12.50R17 with a specific 17x9, -12 mm wheel combination and trimming, while a narrower 285/70R17 path is documented differently.
The important lesson is not that a certain number of lift inches “fits 33s.” It is that the exact tire and wheel combination has to match the manufacturer’s table or notes for that exact vehicle and kit.
35-inch tires: wheel width and backspacing become especially important
Thirty-five-inch tires are common in current F-150, Ram, GM 1500 and Tacoma lift-kit guidance, but the supporting conditions vary. BDS lists up-to-35-inch guidance for its current 4-inch F-150 and Ram 1500 systems, while its 6-inch Tacoma system reaches the same nominal tire class on a different vehicle and architecture.
Fabtech’s current 2025–2026 GM 1500 6-inch systems are more explicit: the manufacturer lists 35x12.50R18 or 35x12.50R20 on 9-inch-wide wheels with 5 inches of backspacing and minor trimming. That level of detail is what a useful tire-clearance answer should preserve.
37-inch tires: do not assume that a tall lift makes them automatic
Thirty-seven-inch guidance usually appears on larger suspension systems, but even a 6-inch label is not enough by itself. BDS publishes up-to-37-inch guidance on current 6-inch F-150 and Ram 1500 applications. Fabtech’s current 6-inch F-150 guidance distinguishes 35x12.50R20 from 37x12.50R20 on the same 20x9, 5-inch-backspacing wheel: the larger tire carries a more demanding trimming state.

Offset and backspacing are not interchangeable with lift height
A wheel that moves the tire outward can improve clearance in one area while making contact more likely somewhere else. Backspacing and offset also interact with wheel width, so copying one number without the matching wheel width can be misleading. When a manufacturer publishes both wheel width and backspacing or offset, keep those values together.
Factory wheels can also be restricted even when an aftermarket wheel of the same diameter is supported. Some large-kit product pages specifically say the OEM wheel/tire combination cannot be used. That is a wheel-fit condition, not evidence that the suspension kit itself does not fit the vehicle.
Nominal tire size is not an exact physical dimension
Two tires carrying the same sidewall size can differ in measured diameter and section width by brand, model, load range and approved wheel width. Manufacturer lift-kit tables therefore provide a useful starting point, not a promise that every tire wearing the same nominal label will clear identically.
For a build close to the clearance limit, compare the tire maker’s actual published dimensions as well as the lift-kit manufacturer’s wheel/tire notes.
Use the height guides after the vehicle configuration is known
The 3-inch, 4-inch and 6-inch lift guides show how system architecture and installation requirements change with height. Vehicle pages such as the F-150, Tacoma, Ram 1500 and Silverado 1500 guides narrow the vehicle configuration first.
If your main goal is stance rather than larger tires, compare a lift kit with a leveling kit before assuming a full suspension lift is necessary.
